Spammers are Pathetic

Posted by d2312564 - August 8th, 2007

OK, everyone knows that email spammers are pathetic, but I'm not sure everyone is aware of the extent of it.

Once upon a time, I used a certain email address. This was when I was about 11. I was young then, and I basically plastered the address all over the internet. I gave it out to any site that asked, used it for signups, etc. I started using the address sooner than when I was 11, but eventually the quantities of spam I was receiving daily was just unbearable. So, one day, I said enough is enough, got a new address, and put my old, spammed up address to rest. Also to note, this address was tied to one of my dad's domain names, a 4 letter one in fact, so it was a great address.

Fast forward 6 years. I now own the 4 letter domain that my old email address was at, so just yesterday I thought about re-creating the address on my server just to see what was doing there, and if it was still receiving spam. I was CERTAIN that after 6 years of no use, after not even existing, the address would not be receiving any spam. GOD was I wrong. So, I went into my server control panel, and created the old address on the domain that I now own. I start checking it, and to my unpleasant fucking surprise, IT IS STILL RECEIVING ABOUT 4 SPAMS PER MINUTE. Think how unbelievable that is. For SIX years spammers using the address were getting their emails returned, and the address wasn't in circulation for SIX years. I found it unbelievable.

The bottom line in that story is spammers are pretty fregin' stupid. Wherever they found/bought/acquired the address from, they were wasting their resources to send spam to a 6 year old, non-existent address. I imagine most of the addresses on their lists are that old, so I don't honestly see how they could be doing well if they can't even acquire a list of real email addresses.

Anyway, right now it looks like I'm going to have to retire this address FOR GOOD and just eat it. It's ashame though, so maybe in 10 years?

You mentioned how they were wasting their resources to send mail to that address, and I think that's the underlying truth that all spamming is based on - the fact that sending e-mail is free and uses a negligible amount of resources (for all intents and purposes, zero). So the spammers' lists just keep growing and growing, and it makes little difference if the mails bounce or not. They figure, why not send mail to addresses that haven't worked for years? It's all free anyway.

This is why one of the ideas to combat spam was to add a tiny fee to sending e-mail. Even if it's only like one cent per e-mail, that could be enough to destroy spammers' profit margins. But implementing such a plan would require a huge amount of time and coordination across the net - so it'll probably never happen.

That's a really good point. I remember my dad told me they were looking in to implementing the small charge for sending email many years ago, but it never materialized. It seems like it would stop spammers, but it would cause so many problems with mass NON spam emailings like Newgrounds does each night, and other services.

In my opinion, the spam spawns from the pathetic ease of obtaining a free email account with Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, and MANY more. I think there's an easy way to fix this. All free email service providers should be required by LAW to get the physical mailing address and phone number of all account openers. I don't know how they would authenticate them, but they can do an automatic calling code or something. Because it's obvious if spammers were aware that email providers had their personal information, they wouldn't want to be caught red handed doign something illegal.

But yeah, again, you make a good point. I guess they have nothing to lose by keeping sending mail to the address, and also, list sellers keep it on the list probably so they can boost their "email address count" when selling lists.

Thanks for the comment.

yeah the spammers never will tired of spamming. i'm sure maybe a couple of those sites that were spamming you have closed down by now, but of course they gave your email out to a couple of people before doing so.

a four letter domain, quite nice, makes me think of what all the URLs are going to look like 10 years from now, haha. i'm a little curious as to what the domain was, care to tell me? if you don't wanna post it a PM would be fine with me, but if you wanna withhold that information, i understand that :)

my hotmail account is nothing but garbage, poop, and spam, but i still gotta get on every 30 days just so it doesn't expire, bah i hate hotmail. why not make a new email off of the 4 letter domain? i mean, i know you're losing all sorts of sentimental value, but that address has been tainted with spam :(

PS click here if you want to make your penis bigger! no, for real!!

Haha, yeah, I've been getting so many of those penis enlargement emails and some of them even have PICTURES OF PENISES, I swear to god.

And about the domain, I have no problem saying it publicly, but it is kind of awkward because of what it is (coincidently). The domain is actually totw.com. And NO, it's NOT based on "turd of the week". My dad registered it long before turd of the week was even a thought. He registered it in 1996 I believe, thinking ahead for something like "top of the web", which me and my friend are making into a site with that premise, but it's not complete yet. We're not actually hosting web content, but we're linking to it on different sites like Newgrounds and such, and crowing a "top of the web" every week which we're guna do some stuff with. It's kind of a cool web content link hub except we're going to put a cool twist on the "top of the web" winners each week. The domain has never been put to use before so we're hoping to do so soon.

Thanks for the comment.

As Ross said, sending all those junky emails is free, the companies don't pay a cent for all that shit.

Penis pumper plz

I guess. I honestly don't see how they can make any money off those garbage emails anyway. I can't see anyone actually buying that crap from a spammer who jumbles up the language just to try to get it through the spam filters.

Thanks for the comment.

can i have your email so i can spam it and be a trend follower?

I would give it to you Lu, but that would be pointless. No matter what you send, it can't physically qualify as spam because you're LUIS.

It's like if Tom Fulp emailed you a death threat. The Tom Fulp sending factor immediately circumvents the threat and it becomes GOLD. TOM FUCKING FULP.

When Barry Bonds hit HR #756, it was no longer a baseball, but rather a $500,000 dollar bill.

The same thing goes with you. Spam from Luis =/= spam.

WTF am I talking about?

Lets go red sox!

LOL no the Red Sux suck. They lost to Tampa Bay yesterday, LOL.

That's just... wow. lol... I only give my email away to people or sites for a reason...

I know but the thing is if you make one mistake with a site you think is trustworthy and they sell your address, you're done.

I actually created an email address to sign-up at all those random websites that really do nothing but need a registration for random purposes.

I never check it, so I have no clue whether it's getting spam or not.

I AM HALLIBABBAH OF NIGERIA! I NEED $20 MILLION OR MY FAMILY WILL GO TO JAIL! IF YOU SEND IT TO ME I WILL INSURE YOU'RE RICHES FOR THE NEXT 45 YEARS!

lol

lol, but that's actually a good idea. The only problem is, for most sites I register for I DO want email updates. The spam happens when one of these sites I trust sells my address. For sites I don't care about I simply don't register for. Because in reality, you only give your email to sites you actually want to register for.
